Super Steps : How to Make the Most of Your New Job

1

Determine your goals.

Before your first day, grab your fancy pen and paper and sit in your favorite chair. Brainstorm everything you want to accomplish. Try to develop something for the first day, week, and month. Writing your goals down with a deadline gives you something to work towards. When you share them with your boss, they will provide you with additional ideas for your new role. This can ultimately help you come up with your long-term goals as well.

2

Think about your main priorities for this job.

How can you be successful in this role? In your interview, you asked the questions to help you understand your new priorities. Have a chat with your boss or peers about issues that need solutions. It s why you are here! Your priorities are specific to your field, but be as detailed as we are being with our executive chef.

3

Exel at everything you promised in the interview.

Let’s go back to the interview. What did you say you could do? This might be a spoiler alert but if you said you could do something that you actually CAN’T do, you re probably going to get fired. Just because you got the job doesn’t mean you are going to keep it. Make a list of everything you promised the hiring manager. That way, you can keep track of their expectations (and then exceed them!) going into the job.

What are some things that you can accomplish first? Try starting with communication. Get everyone who will be effected talking about how to solve problems, challenges, and voice their ideas. This will set the stage for everyone to buy into the change and solutions to making things better. This will then boost your confidence to work towards getting those ideas up and working with the power of your co-workers, teammates, and management.

Connect with others at your new job.

Remember when you built up your LinkedIn network? You will want to do the same thing at your new job. So, talk to people, and invite them for coffee or lunch. In this case, you pay. You can build invaluable rapport. A support group can bring opportunities for mentors, teachers, friends, powerful co-workers, and those who will vouch for you. You can never go wrong with networking.

6

Hold yourself accountable.

The best thing you can do for yourself is to refer back to your list of goals regularly. No one will hold you accountable as much as you will for yourself. Which goals have you achieved? Can any of them be taken to a new level? Which goals do you still need to work on?

Reflecting will always help you grow. It gives you a reason to cheer yourself on for accomplishing things. It can also motivate you to keep pushing until you achieve your goals.
