Respect your interviewer’s timeline.

Be patient! The interviewer will likely tell you when to expect a follow- up. Until then, be sure to play it cool so as not to scare off your potential employer. Pushing it this early in the game can be annoying and come off as aggressive.

Don’t spam the interviewer with messages.

Again, respect the company’s time. Especially if they are considering you for a position. Show that you trust their judgment and give them some space!

Plan your follow-up call or email to make yourself memorable to the interviewer.

(Talking Point: “Hi this is Wenhui Lin. I interviewed for the literary agent position on May 24th and I am calling to follow up.”)

When you have waited a reasonable amount of time, however, feel free to follow up with the interviewer. Especially if it is a few days past the date they said they would give their decision (see Steps 1 & 2). Be polite in your follow up call or email. Gently remind the hiring team that you are still waiting to hear back from them. This action will demonstrate how interested you are in working for their company.

Find a fitting

Thank-you card.

This is a chance to showcase your creativity and gratitude! Make sure it s appropriate and professional, but choose a card that reveals your appreciation for the company and the interviewer’s time.

Send your interviewer a personal note of thanks.

Make sure your card reaches the interviewer before the hiring decision is made! You can hand deliver it to them or expedite it in the mail to make sure it arrives on time.

  1. Keep researching and learning about the company to which you’ve applied. Make sure you understand the company’s brand and mission. Understanding their goals will help you achieve much more in your new role.

  2. Continue looking for other job opportunities that match your skill set. We can’t say it enough KEEP SEARCHING! Getting hired by a company is never a guarantee. Even if you’re a perfect match, it’s always good to have some other opportunities available. But you have to find those opportunities first.

Don’t:
 
  1. Lie to the interviewer about having other job offers lined up. Recruiters can track down whether you’ve been offered a position with another company. So always be honest about the status of other jobs to which you’ve applied. The last thing you’d want is for a potential employer to think you’re a dishonest hire.

  2. Place your two weeks’ notice at your current job until you’ve officially been hired. Once hired, you might be excited about your new job. But wait until the right time to tell your boss and co-workers. Your new job offer could always fall through for some reason, even by no fault of your own. But if you’ve already told your teammates your plans, having them wonder what went wrong might be more than embarrassing!
