Accountability Sidekick!

Last week’s assignment was to make a list of your core values and rank them. Have you done it? If so fireworks and fanfare for you! Be sure to check that off your to-do list with something bright and colorful. Also, head over to our Private LinkedIn Membership Community and brag about it! Share what you did, what you accomplished, and your ideas with the community. By sharing, you’ll inspire others to do the same.

If you didn’t… YOU FAIL!

Just kidding. If you haven’t done last week’s actions, then go back to last week’s lesson. Since we’re building every week on top of the week prior, it’s you must finish each action step. No “buts”!

So let’s proceed, shall we?

Online applications are frustrating, so quit filling them out, would ya?  We cannot say this enough! Online job applications are like Crest white strips and putting up with sexual harassment: no longer necessary to get a job.

Story Time! Here’s one of our all-time favorite scary stories to tell around a campfire. It’s called ONLINE APPLICATIONS.

Once upon a time, Simone filed out an online application for her dream job and received the dreaded automated message she’d been waiting for: “We’ll be in touch”. She waited by her computer for what started out as hours, then turned into days, and eventually into weeks.

Simone stopped sleeping. She started having fits of insanity, hearing ghostly bings of email notifications that never even existed. Every sound caused her to lunge for the phone for news. Soon, Simone began to whisper prayers and threats to her email account. She stopped leaving the house and shaved her head in the hopes that would please the job-market Gods. When that didn’t work, Simone fell into despair, left the job market, and was never seen again…

Don’t be Simone.

Puppy Lover or Puppy Hater? You Decide

All the best jobs are found through personal relationships, not job boards. HR recruiters are much more likely to hire a referral than to hire a candidate that they have no outside information about. Bullet points may be useful for holding a conversation but it doesn’t allow you to show an employer your skills or your personality.

Job boards and online applications only give you access to 20% of the jobs available, and most of the time, that 20% are entry-level jobs. The rest are held back by the company.

Knowing these stats, it’s time to target your dream company.

You have to find companies that have values that align with yours. Let’s say you had two columns: in one, you say ‘I love puppies’ and ‘I’m a hard worker’, while in the second one, you put your skills and experience. Which column do you think an employer would like more? Yes, loving puppies will put you in a positive light compared to your puppy-hating competition (cough cough, Simone), but it won’t show an employer your value to their company.

Make sure to put the right skills upfront.

Why You Need to Target Your Top 3 Companies

It is important to target your top three companies. In doing so you are creating opportunities for yourself instead of relying on an online job application and job boards. Establishing a personal relationship with an employer is an excellent way for you to stand out from the crowd.

Where is the Love?

Working in your top three companies will help you gain skills and experience. So work with people you want to work for! Working in a company that doesn’t align with your morals and values, or doesn’t accept you as you are is not worth your time and is a wasted opportunity (like not using that Groupon! Okay, we promise, we’ll stop). Trust us, working for a company that you hate will make you feel like your soul is being attacked by a dementor.
