Before we start, remember that no one knows you until they meet you! Seems counterintuitive, doesn’t it?

Maybe, but this is such an important truth to understand, especially during this stage where you are putting yourself out there. No matter what has happened to you in the past, mistakes you have made, tough life situations you have encountered, or insecurities that you may have about yourself; these people don’t know those things! Show them your confidence and that you are worth their time.

“You better lose yourself in the music, the moment
You own it, you better never let it go
You only get one shot, do not miss your chance to blow
This opportunity comes once in a lifetime you better-“
You can do anything you set your mind to, man.
Wow! The Beatles and now Eminem!? Who knew so many musicians wanted you to succeed in your career goals?

Dress appropriately.
Just because it is a business meetup doesn’t necessarily mean you have to wear a suit and tie. Dress for the environment or position within the company. If it’s an accounting position that you ultimately want, formal attire may be suitable. Whereas, if you are looking to work at a skateboard shop then you are better off dressing casually. As they say, ‘Dress for the job you want’.

Don’t immediately ask for the job.
That would be like walking into a bar and asking someone to follow you into the bathroom! Odds are it’s not going to happen unless that person is either crazy or desperate. So a word of advice for your love life… don’t ask random people to sleep with you! It won’t end well! Unless you’re the protagonist from a cheesy romance novel! Let us know if you have any stories to disprove that theory though… We’re curious.

Let your interaction with the person include conversation topics besides work!
Turn your charm level to 100 and probe into their hobbies and interests. Ask them questions and find a common ground between the two of you so you can get to know each other on a more personal level. This may help make the meeting feel more relaxed and take off some of the pressure of you.

If you like them, invite them to coffee or to do something else that you have bonded over.
Inviting them to come over and Netflix and Chill is an old trick, but still works. If you don’t particularly like them, think of it as a one night stand (without all the messy walks of shame)!
5
Know what you ultimately want from this person.
At the end of the conversation, they may ask what they can do for you. If they do, make sure you know the answer. It could be asking them to let you know about any upcoming opportunities in the area, an introduction to HR, or tips on what you can do better or differently to get your dream job. Whatever it is, make sure to ask politely. Demanding anything will lose you all those brownie points you just built up. This is an opportunity to turn this first date into an interview!

After the meeting, make sure to follow up and thank them for taking the time to meet with you.
This will leave a positive impression and could help you score points with them in the future. Play all your cards until the end!

The question that I’m sure we have all googled asked our friends about, and stewed over for hours… how to get a second, third, and fourth date.
I’m going to give it to you right from the beginning, our advice for you is not to buy a boombox and standing under people’s windows. Sorry! We know that can be fun every once in a while but our fix requires time, hard work, and dedication. But don’t worry, we are all in this together!
P.S. Don’t feel like you can’t take a little breather to eat some ice cream and watch your favorite chick flick every once in a while! Invite us and we will be right over! Make sure to buy enough Ice Cream for everyone!

In these business meetings, we would hope to have a few more “dates” in order to get our foot in the door, receive a reference, and get an interview.

What are your skills?
Are you techy? A good listener? An amazing balloon animal artist? A lion tamer? No matter how random or obscure your talents may seem to you, please use them! Also, combine them, you never know what the outcome might be! They can be an amazing asset when you are trying to build relationships with these business professionals. Through talking to these individuals, learn what they might need and offer some free labor and assistance.
2
Go into the meeting knowing your “Why” and your “Call to Action”.
You want to have a purpose for the meeting along with a deadline to reconnect for a second “date”. Practice this in front of the mirror or with your friends and family! Or even do it theatre style on a fountain in a park! Who cares!

Never go into a meeting without having your first steps ready and some talking points.
Preparing beforehand will make you feel more confident and keep the conversation going. Have some ideas about how you can help these business professionals. Showing how you can be an asset to them will help keep the relationship going. It’s like pitching a movie idea to a producer! They may say “Okay, what else do you got?”

Leverage your assets to further the relationship!

This week we have a special challenge for you!
Your mission, should you choose to accept it is to schedule five “first dates.”
As always, should you or any of your IM Force be captured or killed, the Secretary will disavow any knowledge of your actions. This tape will self-destruct in ten seconds. Good luck.
Woah… Sorry. Just got into that Mission Impossible mode, if you know what I’m saying! But hey, this mission is still a serious one because it will get you that much closer to your dream job. But don’t worry, this message will not self-destruct… phew.
So make sure you set up those 5 “first dates!” Let us know how it goes and we look forward to having you back next week for “Charming Your Audience.”
You are always welcome to check out our many internship opportunities to take your skills and experience a level higher!
