Frustrations and Apprehensions About Negotiating the Job Offer

It can be extremely tempting to grab onto whatever is being offered like a dog leaping onto a bone, especially when you are just starting off. Unfortunately, this can only do more harm than good. The frustrations and apprehensions that

come with negotiating a job offer are understandable but we’re about to break it down for you and make it as easy as we can so you can breeze through it like a pro!

Why You Need to Negotiate

Quick Facts About Negotiation

1. You are often expected to negotiate! HR typically gives an offer with room to negotiate for a larger salary.

2. Negotiation establishes your baseline for your employment at your prospective or current company. This does not just apply to your salary, but raises as well!

3. An employer may form an opinion of your worth based on whether or not you negotiate. For example, if you don’t negotiate, your employer may think that you are desperate and that they can hand anything your way and you will just take what you are given. Show them you have a spine and know your value

4. This process shows your employer that you can negotiate for the company. Do you want your company to promote you or give you a salary bump in the future? Show them you can get them five puppies instead of the three they were originally offered!

First and foremost, don’t count your chickens before they hatch! Yes, make sure you land an offer before you start negotiating. Most of us are in a rush to accept the job offer and open the champagne bottle but that’s the easy part. The tough and often tricky part is negotiating, without which there is every chance you might sell yourself short. Let’s first think for a bit about why negotiation can get you the best value for your chops.

Your current salary will follow you to your next job. You want to make as much as possible for the work you do. Negotiating will get you a higher salary, a better benefits package, a sign-on bonus, etc. This may be the time you’re buying your first apartment or paying off student loans. So, we’re here to help you get the most out of the job possible. When you negotiate, it shows HR and the hiring manager that you know your value. Every employer expects you to negotiate. If you don’t ask, then you won’t get it.

There are so many benefits to negotiation, we will show you how in our next episodes! Go below and read and prepare your ACTION points. Check out the next episode on “How to Negotiate.” See you there!
