Did you write down your core values and rank them? If you did, head on over to our Private LinkedIn Membership Community and share them with us! This way you can inspire others who may be having a hard time coming up with their own values. It’s just like sharing your notes with your friends.
Remember we’re all in this together! If you didn’t, go back to last week’s episodes and complete the actions step by step. Remember, we are building every week on top of the previous week. This week’s topic is all about targeting where you want to work.
Do you ever feel like a certain company may be out of your reach? That you aren’t good enough for them? As a college student or recent grad, you may feel insecure about your job experience and think others are more qualified for the position than you are. But don’t think about that! Remember you can do anything you set your mind to, especially if you want it bad enough! Just think back to that time when you studied really hard for a test and ended up getting an “A”. And don’t forget we’re here to guide you every step of the way! If you don’t hear back from the company, it’s most likely that they were not a good fit for you anyway.
You may be worried about choosing the wrong company and having second thoughts. This is why you want to figure out what values you want in a company before reaching out. If you’re struggling with this, go back and watch last week’s episodes where we talked about aligning your values to your dream company. Make a list of what you want in a company, like flexible hours, and things you won’t tolerate or deal-breakers, such as a hostile work environment. Knowing what you want out of a company can help you choose the right one. You can always leave the company if it doesn’t end up aligning with your core values. Remember, it’s okay to change your mind about a company!
You are creating an opportunity for yourself instead of relying on job boards. Remember, all of your competition is filling out online applications. You should not be. Be different! Don’t be that person who skips 8 am classes because everyone else is doing it.
You’re wasting time and energy just applying online. Remember, only 20-50% of job postings are online, the rest are being held back by the company. The 20-50% that is out there are usually low-level jobs. Every once in a while, a VP or Director job will bubble up, but that is usually because they weren’t able to fill the job internally or through a referral. This is where relationship building becomes a very important step. Don’t worry we will cover this topic more in our next few episodes!
When you choose your top 3 companies, you get to work for a company that is the right fit for you! This way, all of your most important values will be in alignment with the company. Do you want to work for a more flexible company? If you do, then targeting your top 3 companies will set you up to do just that. If you want to work for a company that focuses on the environment or some other position that you value, then you will have that! Targeting your top 3 companies will also help you achieve your goals and gain experience in a field that you want, working for the people you want. If a company isn’t the right fit, there isn’t much point in pursuing the opportunity. Remember you want to feel comfortable working within that company and having matching values is the first step.
