Video Time: 4 Minutes Action Time: 1 – 3 Hours
This is the step where real live people get involved! Not robots! Below are the step-by-step instructions on how to reach out on LinkedIn:
1Go to the company’s LinkedIn page. At the top of the page, there is a Follow button. If you haven’t already, click that button to start following the company.
2On the right-hand side of the top bar, click on the See all [number] employees on LinkedIn link.
3You will get a list of people. Click the Connect button next to their names.
4In the window that pops up, click on Add a note.
5Type your message into the text box, and then click Done.
A good connection request note includes why you want to connect with them and a call to action.
This is just like work speed dating! The more people you get to know the more “dates” you will go on, which will lead to more job opportunities. If you have a shared connection, you can ask for an introduction to the recruiter or hiring manager of that company. This is a good idea if you want to use the “3rd person effect” we have previously mentioned.
Use a split test! Test 10 people using direct message and test 10 people through the “3rd person effect.” See which gets you the best results! Whichever gets you farther ahead is what you should implement in the future. It’s like when you try multiple methods of studying to see which one works the best for you.
Don’t …
… Use a standard, canned message. Everyone hates those. Don’t be the person who does the thing everyone hates. It leaves a bad first impression!
