Hey, everybody! Welcome to Week 10, Episode 2!
Negotiating may seem complicated at first, but we are here to walk you through the process. So, let’s get started.
1Prepare ahead of time: in week eight you should have found out the salary range for the jobs you are interviewing for before the interview. If you didn’t you, must know the average pay for your position; find the average salary by checking out Indeed, Monster, and Career Builder.
2There are three ways you can receive an offer—by video conferencing, by phone, or by email. Ideally, you would meet to negotiate on a video conferencing platform (Skype, Zoom, etc.) and log on a few minutes earlier in case your computer is running slow, or you would have a phone call. If you get the offer by email, you will want to set up a video conference or phone call so you can negotiate in person. Never negotiate in writing! Words can be interpreted in several ways and you want to make sure that your terms of negotiation are understood in your favor.
Remember
Remember, whatever they tell you, write it down. If they give you a letter, read it carefully. If they list off the offer, write it down because you will repeat it out loud to them.
3Always be positive, polite, and professional! SMILE! Keep it relaxed. As a reminder, pay attention to your body language. You can also psyche yourself up beforehand. Look in the mirror and tell yourself that you deserve every penny you are going to negotiate for (and thank goodness they won’t pay you in pennies!).
4You may or may not get an offer in writing, if you do go over the employment offer and benefits carefully! Make sure there aren’t any hidden surprises. We’ve had enough of those for one year! You don’t want to accept the offer of working as ‘Aficionado Specialist’ only to find out you will be making coffee!
5For salary, ask for more than you expect because you may end up getting it, or they may try to negotiate lower or meet you halfway—a Win-Win situation. Consider the WHOLE package and negotiate ANY other BENEFITS! And when asking questions, ask open-ended questions! This encourages discussion.
Here’s an Example

Convert this kind of opportunity into something that means more to you whether that be time off or more salary or something else you can creatively think of.
