Don’t

…Use a standard, canned message. Everyone hates those. Don’t be the person who does the thing everyone hates. It leaves a bad first impression!

Here’s a sample message you could send to your new connections:

Hi Carlos!

Thanks for connecting with me! I’m an aspiring screen writer and I would like to interview you and find out how you got to where you are. Would you be able to meet me on Skype or Zoom? Friday at 2 or 3 pm PT.

Thanks! Maddie

This is just like work speed dating!

The more people you get to know, the more “dates” you will go on, which will lead to more job opportunities.

If you have a shared connection, you can ask for an introduction to the recruiter or hiring manager of that company. This is a good idea if you want to use the “3rd person effect” we have previously mentioned.

Use a split test! Test 10 people using direct message and test 10 people through the “3rd person effect.” See which gets you the best results!

Whichever gets you farther ahead is what you should implement in the future.
