1Decide which platform you’ll use for your remote meeting and convey it to the person you’ll meeting beforehand.
Facetime, Skype, Zoom, GoToMeeting, WebEx, Google Meet, or Facebook Messenger? It’s better to pick the one your targeted company’s employee is familiar with and has an account in. Get their ID beforehand and add them to your contact list.

2
Dress appropriately.
You don’t necessarily have to be in a full suit and tie, but dress for the job, at least waist up. Sorry, but no PJs and tousled hair. Remote meetings deserve the same presence as in-person meeting, so make sure you are presentable and professional.

3Check your technology.
In-person meetings can be very challenging, but remote meetings aren’t a piece of cake either! Technology can suddenly decide to play a prank on you and fail at the most critical moment! So, be one step ahead. If you use a laptop, make sure it’s charged. Check your Wi-Fi connection, webcam, speakers, and mic. If your dad walks by in the background without a shirt, make sure you don’t throw a fit in front of the camera. Save that for later. Put your best foot forward, no matter what.

4Make sure you have a pleasant background.
Previously you would have had to shove your laundry into the closet or hide trash under the table, but not anymore! Zoom and several other video conferencing platforms allow you to blur or have a virtual background. Make sure you go to settings and set up a professional background rather than show your pile of laundry or a messy kitchen!

5Find a quiet place.
We’ve taken care of your background visually, so let’s make sure the person who graciously accepted to meet you doesn’t hear kids squealing in the background or your roommate yelling at a video game! Find yourself a quiet room and keep the door closed. Talk to your housemates before the meeting and explain why this meeting is important to you. And just as a reminder, hang up a sign saying, ” Do Not Di$turb! Job Opportunity in Se$ion”!

6Don’t Ask For A Job!
Please, please do not do this. We understand that times are uncertain and can be so for a while, but asking for a job may be perceived as desperate. You may wonder where your next paycheck is going to come from, but don’t let that ruin your relationship. You wouldn’t walk into a bar and ask a stranger to marry you, would you? This is a learning opportunity, not an interview. Focus on learning about the company’s culture, the person you’re meeting, and their role in the company. That should be your goal.

7Create a dialogue.
This is not a college lecture or a seminar. You are not there to quietly take notes. Make the conversation light and friendly. Ask them how they’re surviving the pandemic and how they’re using their time in quarantine. If you are able to see their background and happen to see a family photo or a beautiful painting, compliment them on that! Prepare your questions and conversation ahead of time to avoid reaching a roadblock.
