How to Build a Genuine Professional Relationship

1

Relationships succeed when there is reciprocity.

When people are generous enough to take time out to meet you, it is it’s only fair that you do whatever you can in exchange for their time and value. With the pandemic turning lives upside down, everyone can use some extra help, so think of what you can offer in terms or of skills, talents talents, etc.

A man has a lot to offer for his job but is not willing to take his mask off, safety first!!

Have ideas and a rough plan ready before your meeting.

If you’re a good writer and are good at creating a stellar LinkedIn profile, offer to help them with their LinkedIn profile! If you have any remote or technology skills, these would be good skills to offer a future employer.

With everything said and done, there’s one more important key that can unlock your future, and that is the CALL TO ACTION! Never end your interview without a clear Call to Action. Many of you may think that a call to action is simply a passing reference to sync up and keep in touch. Keeping in touch in not good enough. A clear Call to Action has three parts: WHEN, HOW, and WHY. Always state WHEN you will reach out to them again, HOW you’ll be doing that and, WHY.

Have ideas and a rough plan ready before your meeting.

Here’s an example, “John, thank you so much for meeting with me today. I value your time. and this has been amazing. Let’s loop around Friday with a quick instant message on Skype. I will give you feedback on your LinkedIn, and I would very much appreciate it if you could send an email introduction to me and the live broadcast hiring manager.

4

Remember to leverage your assets to further the relationship!

For example, if you are good with numbers offer your expertise to the company’s budgeting or financial areas. The assets don’t always have to be work-related. If you and the person are both into films, showcase your movie knowledge. This will help further the connection. It’s all about bringing your best qualities forward and showcasing all those skills you spent countless nights improving upon!
