Imagine you’ve had a spectacular interview. You answered all the questions perfectly: your interviewer laughed, they cried, they learned. Your interview was so good that neither you nor your interviewer wants it to end, and then they ask you, “Do you have any questions for me?” And you say… “Nope, see ya,” and hang up.
You didn’t close the deal. But practicing closing the deal is this week’s call to action.
The end of your interview is vital! This is explained by Daniel Kahneman, a Nobel Prize-winning Israeli psychologist, who developed the Peak-End Theory. “The peak-end rule is a psychological heuristic in which people judge an experience largely based on how they felt at its peak (i.e. , its most intense point) and its end, rather than based on the total sum or average of every moment of the experience.” Basically, even if you have an essentially positive interview, a negative or lackluster ending could impact how your interviewer remembers your conversation. This is why endings are so important…

That’s a lot of pressure to put on the end of an interview, but with a little preparation, you’ll be able to use the Peak-End theory to your advantage because it works both ways! Having a great ending to your interview can make your interviewer feel more positive about the conversation.
Every interview ends with, “Do you have any questions for me?” So, this week, your goal is to learn to use this question as an opportunity to take control. Zef gives you some great examples in the episode, including the ever-powerful “Is there any reason you wouldn’t offer me the job?”
You should also have position-specific questions. Asking interviewers about their experience is great because it gives them a chance to brag about themselves for a second. Remember the ever-important connection piece of the interview! If they like hanging out with you, they’ll be more likely to hire you. These questions also help give you insight into your role and what to expect from working within the company.

Take time to draft at least five killer closing questions for your interviewer! You probably won’t ask all five, but it’s good to have backups if some of your questions get answered during the interview. Hell, you should write twenty or more questions to be safe.
Use this as an opportunity to show off all the research you’ve done so far, and take time to address any of their concerns. After you come up with these questions, make sure to practice them out loud either in the mirror or with a buddy!
Here’s A Tip on What Not to Do When Asking Questions
Since you are interviewing remotely, you can write down your questions ahead of time! Just make sure to write them in your voice, or it’ll sounds awkward when you ask them. (If you wouldn’t say “indubitably” in a normal conversation, don’t use it in your question.)
