The meeting, or “First Date”, with the connections you made is one of the most important steps in getting a job because it gets you an “in” with the company you are targeting.

Meeting with someone connects you on a level that sending in a resume or application simply wouldn’t.  A resume to a prospective employer is just ink on paper that sits in a pile of other papers, but imagine if that person knew what you looked like, or had shared a laugh with you.  Having that meeting makes you a “real” person that they can relate to which increases your chances of getting ahead of those piles.

Going on that “First Date” not only makes you memorable, but it also gives you the opportunity to learn about the company you are interested in and developing a real connection with someone who can be a great reference and get you one step closer to landing the job of your dreams. Doing some internet research on a company website or other places like Glassdoor and LinkedIn may get you a lot of information about the place you are interested in, but only your connection can give you a firsthand perspective on what’s going on at the company in question.

Valuable Insight Only Your Date Can Give You:

  • Information about the company they work for or the field they are in.
  • News about job openings within the company.
  • Valuable insight on what they are looking for in a perfect candidate.
  • Information about their career path.
  • Ideas that can help you advance your career.
  • Another professional in your network who could potentially serve as a great reference!
