However, if you haven’t done last weeks topics, then go back to last week’s lesson. Since we’re building every week on top of the week prior, it’s important you finish each action step. No “buts”!
So let’s proceed, shall we?
Online applications are frustrating, so quit filling them out, would ya? We cannot say this enough! Online job applications are like Crest white strips and putting up with sexual harassment: no longer necessary to get a job. Unlike your competition, Simone, you won’t waste time filling out online job applications.
Simone filed an online application for her dream job and received the automated message she’d been waiting for: “We’ll be in touch.” Waiting by her computer all day and all night, Simone didn’t sleep for days. She started having fits of insanity, hearing ghostly bings of email notifications that never existed… Soon, Simone fell into despair, left the job market, and was never seen again…. but hey, shiitake happens, am I right?
Imagine that your friend had a job offer.
Wouldn’t it be easier to simply call them up for an interview? You wouldn’t fill out an online application when your future employer is only one phone call away.
All the best jobs are found through personal relationships and HR recruiters are more likely to hire a referral. Bullet points may be useful for talking points but it doesn’t allow you to show an employer what your skills are. And, job boards and online applications only give access to 20% of the jobs available. The rest are held back by the company, and most of the time, that 20% are entry level jobs.

It is important to target your top 3 companies. In doing so you are creating opportunities for yourself instead of relying on an online job application and job boards. Establishing a personal relationship with an employer is an excellent way for you to stand out from the crowd. By watching this seminar, you’ve already proven to be different (or saw our ad on

companies will help you gain skills and experience. So work with people you want to work for! Working in a company that doesn’t align with your morals, or doesn’t accept you as you are, is not worth your time and is a wasted opportunity! (like not using that Groupon! Okay, we promise, we’ll stop.
*We are not affiliated with Groupon, nor do we have a Groupon offer. It was merely mentioned for laughs.
